The Strettons is a special area for birds; we have such a diversity of habitats within a small area which attracts a large variety of birds. Obviously there are plenty of typical garden birds but we also have woodlands, wetlands and in particular heathland attracting an even greater diversity of species. The Strettons Area Community Wildlife Group are planning a special day in March focusing on birds with all sorts of opportunities for learning, involvement and enjoyment. Whether you are an experienced birder, a learner or a youngster with everything to learn – we hope everyone will find something to enjoy.

The event is on Saturday 16th March from 10am to 3.30 in Mayfair Community Centre. We have generous funding from the Town Council and Focus Community Awards which means that admission is free for all and allows us to plan some special events.

We can guarantee plenty of activities. There will be all kinds of short talks and workshops on topics such as bird song, photographing birds, caring for swifts, bird ID, surveying, upland species and gardening for birds. One room will focus on family activities – making bird magnets, badges, origami and bird feeders. We will also have live birds of prey on display with a speaker from the Battlefield Bird of Prey Centre in Shrewsbury – a privilege that would normally cost a good sum! Youngsters can have a go at making bird boxes to take away. Some excellent prizes will be awarded to the winners of a competition about “My favorite bird……”

A number of local nature groups plan information stalls where people can chat with local experts and organisations and have a go at bird song ID. Refreshments of coffee, cakes, cookies and lunches will be available. Do come along and gain a greater appreciation and knowledge of our amazing feathered friends.
