Our history

The club is first recorded in the 1908 official town guide and visitors to our popular spa town (as it was then) were invited to play alongside club members. Lawn tennis was at the hub of the town’s society and several grand houses had courts. A prestigious four-day tournament was held – the ‘little Wimbledon of Shropshire’ – with Bunny Austin and Tony Mottram playing.

During the ‘30s Kenneth Horne was a member of the club and helped organise social events – his father was a Baptist minister and his mother a member of the Pilkington family, owners of the famous glass company.
During the 1939 – ’45 war the club virtually disappeared, the town was virtually taken over by billeted soldiers and the recovering blinded soldiers of the St. Dunstan’s charity, which had moved its base to Church Stretton from the south coast in 1940.

Church Stretton first joined the Shropshire leagues in 1968; entering Division 10. The club never had a large playing membership and was stretched to run three men’s and two ladies’ teams. However, the ladies team has great success in the early ‘80s when they reached Division One.

The club had two shale courts in the 1990s which were transferred to the Croquet Club, and in 2000 two of our grass courts were converted to all weather surface courts and membership shot up to seventy. A further all weather court was added and the club now operates with three all weather courts and has use of the pavilion.

The tennis club today

Today, whilst we do run a mixed doubles and mens doubles team, we are mainly a social tennis club. If the weather allows, we play social mixed tennis on Sunday mornings at 10am, so if you you are a player looking for a game or want to just try the game or consider joining us, please come along on a Sunday morning. We can usually even find you a racket if you don’t have one. We are very keen to welcome new members and grow our Club.

For those who want to learn how to play the game or improve their skills, we run coaching, typically on Saturday mornings with WeDoTennis who are our LTA approved coaching team. They provide coaching for different childrens ages 4-5, 6-8, 9-11 and Adult classes. You don’t need to be a member to join these coaching sessions.

If you want to play competitive tennis we have Mens Doubles and Mixed Doubles teams playing in the South Shropshire league. We use our Tennis Pavilion, adjacent to the Courts, to entertain visiting teams.

Our annual membership fees are very reasonable and range from Juniors £25 to Adult £82, which gives you access to the Tennis courts whenever you wish to play.
