The More Singers Choral Concert

The More Singers, Church Stretton’s Chamber Choir, present ‘A Celebration of 20th Century English Choral Music’

Date: Sunday, 17th March 2024

Venue: All Saints Church, Little Stretton (NOT the Methodist Church as previously advertised)

Time: 7.30pm

Following their successful 50th Anniversary concert in November of last year under Musical Director Alistair Auld, in which they performed a whole range of musical styles representing their 50 years of music-making, the choir will be presenting some of the great English choral repertoire from the 20th Century.

Featured Work:
Gerald Finzi’s Lo, the Full, Final Sacrifice, is a ground-breaking work of great passion set to words by Richard Crashaw. The style of the music is very personal to the composer, whose output was small yet significant. Typically, it is soul-searching and deeply moving, as well as having the embodiment of ‘Englishness’ about it. This last is difficult to define, but very much characterises the music of this concert, each composer with his own individual approach.

Other works in the programme:
Herbert Howell’s Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis from his Collegium Regale setting (written for the King’s College Cambridge Choir), Finzi’s uplifting anthem God is gone up, Charles Wood’s O Thou the Central Orb and Edward Bairstow’s delightful anthem Save us, O Lord.

Local organist David Andrew will accompany the choir on the organ at the church. David was an Organ Scholar at St Peter’s College, Oxford and was Director of Music at several high profile schools including Sedburgh in Cumbria and St Mary’s Ascot. David’s wife Anne is a member of the choir, and they live in the heart of Church Stretton.

Choir Director Alistair Auld says:
This concert provides a challenging and largely new repertoire for the choir and their enthusiasm and energy is clear during rehearsals. This will be a wonderful evening of choral music, accompanied by organ, with soloists specially selected from within the choir. We hope that it will attract a large and enthusiastic crowd.

Tickets for the concert are priced at £12 available in advance to guarantee your seat at
www.ticketsource.co.uk/the-more-singers or on the door on the night.
After concert expenses, all profits and donations will go to a charity.
